A Shakespeare Festival for high school Students
Immerse yourself in the power of language,
increase your self confidence,
learn to swear like an Elizabethan,
develop critical life skills,
draw a sword,
and bring Shakespeare’s words to life
with clarity and emotion.
Students produce short scenes in a festival performance, and in the process will develop skills in critical thinking, close reading, literary analysis, public speaking, dance, voice, stage combat, and Shakespearean staging.
How it works
The ISC works with local educators and renowned Shakespeareans to celebrate Shakespeare with high school students.
Each school delegates three to five students who rehearse ten- to fifteen-minute Shakespeare scenes.
Rehearsals are supervised by ISC staff — there is no burden on teachers.
Rehearsals are after school, one afternoon a week, for each of the schools.
The rehearsal period includes instruction in text and performance from ISC leaders and visiting artists.
Rehearsals typically begin in September, with performances in December.
Monologues are interwoven in the scenes. As high school seniors need to prepare classical audition pieces, this training is an additional benefit to participating students.
Devon Glover, The Sonnet Man
We are very proud to partner with the rap artist Devon Glover, who has come to Santa Fe several times to work with the Youth Shakespeare Festival, sharing his hip hop versions of the plays and sonnets. In our first festival year, Devon inspired the teens to write their own sonnets, and the ISC produced a printed book.
